Modelled on the US 1826 pattern round eagle breastplates, these are shown as Plate 471 in O’Donnell and Campbell. They are described in the state’s 1859 regulations and bear the coat of arms later formally adopted by the state. These are rare. O&C state, “a limited quantity was worn by low numbered Ohio units at the beginning of the war.” They are made like the US pattern of stamped rolled brass that is given a lead solder fill to stiffen it and anchor a looped wire for attachment to a cartridge box sling, but differ both in the design of the face and in the use brass wire rather than iron to form the attachment loops.
This is in excellent condition. The rim and face show no dings, dents, or scratches. The rim shows a few darker spots and some of the high points, like the sunrise, mountains and canal boat show some loss to the gilt finish, but the detailing of all the elements, even the texture of the mountainsides and the fine stippling and lines of the ground are sharp and there are noticeable traces of gilt in the recesses of the design elements and surrounding laurel wreath. The fill on the back nice and level, showing a silver gray, with some small, light dings, but no chips, losses or ugly oxidation and we note that the some of the channel of the raised rim is distinct, indicating some care in its production.
This is very strong example of a rare US plate that would fill a gap in even some very advanced collections of US accoutrement plates. [sr][ph:L]
