This is an excellent example of O’Donnell and Campbell Plate #700 in American Military Belt Plates. It shows a very detailed state seal on a finely stippled ground, indicating a secondary die strike after casting. The rim and some of the raised elements show some rubbing, but the main portion shows strong remnants of gilt. The back has the belt hook in place and shows some age stains. When O&C was published (1996/2000,) they noted the pattern was still available in the 1880s and since none of the relic hunters they talked to had found one they dated the design to  1861-1865 and cautiously dated the plates later, but the plates are now accepted as wartime, dating 1864-65. This one is extremely nice. The detailing and condition puts the one illustrated in the book to shame.  [sr][ph:L]
