This is a match for O’Donnell & Campbell Plate 549 in very good condition, with nice bright patina with only minor, thin age stains and a couple of tiny edge dings, over the S and the Y, more visible from the top than the face. It has a good, level full lead solder fill on the back showing gray on the reverse and belt hook and arrow shaped studs securely in place. New York followed federal patterns in its plates of the 1850s and 1860s, bringing in the arrow-back style in 1863, and issuing it on accoutrements with a matching cartridge box plate. These were intended for the state’s militia, but O’Donnell and Campbell note some arrow-back SNY belt plates have been found on 1864-65 sites, noting the Wilderness in particular for the cartridge box plate, which likely holds true for the belt plate as well. This is a strong example that would help fill out a Civil War belt and accoutrement plate collection. See our other offerings for an example of the matching cartridge box plate. [sr][ph:L]
