This plate bears a superficial similarity to the wartime rectangular Virginia sword belt plates using the Virginia seal in the raised oval with motto like Mullinax (1991) 393 or the panel plates with belt loop bar applied to the back like Mullinax 390, but follows the general lines of the US officer’s plates of 1874 and later, using a solid cast and die struck plate but with applied belt loop bar and wide tongue on the reverse. The detail is also a bit less fine on the figures and even in the stippled ground.

This is in very good condition, showing a somewhat dark patina some scattered darker spots, but also some traces of gilt along the underside of the raise oval border at top, around the standing figure and between the letters on the lower raised border of the oval.  [sr][ph:L]
