See O’Donnell and Campbell Plate 931 for these plates. They are modeled on the M1872 introduced with the Hagner belt system, which used additional brass belt fittings with loops to work with a shoulder support system, with one of those loops being transferred for at time to the belt plate in an 1874 version that did not last. O&C note these were produced at the same US arsenals making the US versions that were worn for garrison duty and dress wear (while field gear went to other buckles) from about 1880 to 1902, but that some states used them up to World War I.

This is in very good condition with pleasing mellow, aged tone to the raised borders and letters nicely set off by the slightly darker, reddish brown of the ground.  [sr][ph:L]
