This is a match for O’Donnell & Campbell Plate 548 in good condition, with pleasant medium patina, showing just one small ding on the lower edge, with good definition to the letters, otherwise just minor handling marks, and full lead-solder filled back with level surface, deep gray color mixed with a little light gray and both iron wire loops in place. These were patterned after the US 1839 versions and were issued by the state in conjunction with oval SNY belt plates on accoutrement sets. O’Donnell and Campbell describe this as a late-war variation of the “broad-letter” style issued with the SNY belt plates using arrow-back hooks, which were mainly used by the militia/national guard within the state 1863-1865, though they report a few field finds of those plates on 1864 sites, the Wilderness in particular, on which have also been found the “thin-letter” version of the cartridge box plate (see O&C Plate 550,) so there is no reason why some of these may not have made their way to the front also.[sr] [ph:L]
