These cartridge box belt plates were patterned after the US 1826 round eagle breast plates and, like them, are made of stamped rolled brass that is given a lead solder fill to stiffen it and anchor a looped wire for attachment to a cartridge box sling, but differ both in the design of the face and in the use brass wire rather than iron to form the attachment loops. These are shown as Plate 471 in O’Donnell and Campbell, are described in the state’s 1859 regulations, bear the coat of arms later formally adopted by the state, and are rare: O&C state, “a limited quantity was worn by low numbered Ohio units at the beginning of the war.”
This is in very good condition, with a dark patina, but little corrosion front or back. The edge of the rim is good and the detailing of all the elements is quite fine, on both the larger, raised elements like the outer and inner rim, the wreath, mountains, sun rise, stack of wheat, crossed arrows and canal boat, and even the subtler stippled texture of the mountainsides and the fine lines of the water are sharp. The brass wire loops, correct for this pattern, are in place and secure. The lead solder fill on the back is level and shows as a silver gray, with some shallow dings and small shallow losses in places along the edge, and some deeper carved decoration by a bored soldier that consist mainly of curving lines, leaving us at a loss on what he was trying to convey, if anything.
This is a very good example of a scarce US plate that would fill a gap in even some advanced US accoutrement plate collections. [sr] [ph:L]
