This Civil War belt plate is in excellent condition, with pleasing mellow patina, good definition to the lettering, border and edge, and nice, full, lead solder back, with even surface and uniform gray color, with the brass oval studs and belt hook in place. For parallels see O’Donnell & Campbell Plates 542-545. In connection with the latter they note: “An examination of hundreds of SNY plates found in 1861-1862 sites around Washington, D.C., confirms the illustrated style enjoyed widespread use by New York’s first volunteer regiments.” (This thin letter style was also used on some to the later arrowhead stud pattern SNY plates- this one has the early-war “puppy-paw” studs.) This is a great looking plate showing just some minor age stains and one miniscule, narrow ding on the lower edge. It displays nicely and would look great alongside a Civil War photo of a New York soldier wearing one. [sr][ph:L]
