This is British used by an "Armed Association" or militia. One of the better-known Armed Associations was formed in 1798 in Bute for local defense. The local Sheriff submitted to a meeting of the Lieutenancy the names of 106 men who agreed "to be armed, trained and exercised without pay or gratuity for the defense of the Isle of Bute" against French invasion and for the purposes of preserving internal peace. The Isle of Bute is an island in the Firth of Clyde in Scotland, United Kingdom. It is divided into highland and lowland areas. The cast convex brass plate is in excellent unexcavated condition. It is marked, "ARMED" over "1798" over "ASSOCIATION". The plate was attached to the adjustable white buff over-the-shoulder belt that held the bayonet in scabbard. The reverse of the 3-inch by 2-inch plate has a hook and 2 round solid washers on posts that are silver soldered in place. The patina is a plum brown. [pe] [PH:L]
