These plates were introduced in 1826 for use on the bayonet shoulder belt. When the switch was made to wear the bayonet on the waistbelt in the early 1840s these plates with their three hooks were relegated to use on the shoulder belts for the 1840 pattern non-commissioned officer and musician swords.

This is a very fine non-excavated example of the Civil War N.C.O. plate, which features the same stamped brass “Eagle” face as found on the breast plate on the Civil War infantry cartridge box sling.  The only difference between the two is the arrangement of the attachment device on the rear. This N.C.O. plate has the three doubled iron-wire hooks on the reverse held in place by a lead solder fill.

This plate is complete and fine in every way.  [jet][ph:L]
