This belt plate is in very good, non-excavated condition with bright face, good definition to the letters and rim, and a full, level lead-solder fill back showing as a muted silver with just some scattered gray areas. We see just one tiny ding to the edge at upper left, above the left arm of the “U” and a shallow bump at the right edge, near the hook- all just enough to show it was issued and worn, but not abused.
Arrowhead shaped fastening studs had been used on the older, small size US plates before the war, and starting in 1862 began replacing the round or oval studs of the “puppy-paw” style larger US ovals, becoming the standard configuration from 1863 to 1865, with at least one prominent maker referring in 1863 to the oval studs as the “old pattern.”
This is a very good example of a standard Civil War US army issued infantryman’s belt plate. [sr][ph:m/L]
