Made for a uniformed Royal servant of King George III by Peter Carter of London, England in 1794. The plate is beautifully hand engraved with the Order of the Garter and motto: "HONI SOIT QUI MALY PENSE" (Evil to evil thinkers). Above this is: PRO REGE ET LEGE ET GREGE (For the King, Law and People). This is surmounted by the Georgian crown. There is a fine engraved beading all around the outside circumference. The stamped plate is maker marked "PC" and hallmarked on the back. One of the three marks a "t" dating this plate to 1794. It has 2 "puppy paws" and a 1 1/2-inch single hook for adjustment on the baldric. The baldric or shoulder harness certainly held a decorative sword. The size of the plate is 2 1/2 inches by 3 1/4 inches. A fine piece of Georgian silver. [pe][ph:L]
