This silver(ed) bronze buckle is the rare "Modèle d'août 1830" a design created during "The July Monarchy". In 1830, the discontent caused by Charles X’s authoritarian policies culminated in an uprising in the streets of Paris known as the 1830 July Revolution ("Les Miserable" and all like that there). Charles was forced to flee and Louis-Philippe d’Orléans ascended the throne, marking the beginning of The July Monarchy, so named for the Revolution. Louis-Philippe ruled not as “King of France” but as “King of the French,” which made clear that his right to rule came from the people and was not divinely granted. Despite this Louis-Philippe remained conservative, and reforms mainly benefited the upper-class citizens. Civil unrest remained a permanent feature of the July Monarchy, with riots and uprising continuing throughout his rule. In 1848 protests and riots broke out in the streets of Paris. An angry mob converged on the royal palace, after which the hapless king abdicated and fled to England; the Second Republic was then proclaimed, ending the July Monarchy.
As a silver buckle it is probably "Guard Nationale" a version of our old militia or today's National Guard. It is horse artillery or light artillery. It is cast brass or bronze and subsequently a silver finish was applied. Made as early as 1830 it would continue in use for decades including the Crimean War of 1854 to 1856. The 2 round portions with crossed cannons, a flaming grenade and a stand of cannon balls are 1 1/2 inches in diameter and the joining serpent is 2 inches long; the overall length is 6 3/4 inches. The belt loops are 2 inches high. The condition is perfect. [pe][ph:L]
