This die-struck and lead filled oval plate measures just over 2 inches in diameter. It has iron wire belt hooks on the back. The motif on the front is an 8-pointed star. The eight-pointed star has been used as a symbol of protection for centuries. In many cultures, it is believed that the eight points represent the eight directions of the compass, and that the star can therefore protect against evil forces coming from any direction. These plates are closely associated with the first militia drafts in 1861 from the State of Rhode Island. However, a well-documented example was worn by private Andrew Moyer of the 179th Pennsylvania Infantry (see attachments). Please follow this link (179th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Civil War Volunteers). This example was used and has a few minor dents in its face, but the patina is a mellow one.  A rarity that was evidently worn on the battlefields.  [pe][ph:L]
