This belt buckle is US and is of Civil War vintage. It could be US Navy, Marine or Mercantile Navy etc. so it should be referred to as "Sea Service". It is certainly martial in style and made of cast brass that had gilt applied as a finish. The buckle has a laurel leaf decorated wreath (the female portion) attached to a bar which the belt would have looped through. The tongue, or male portion, has the fouled anchor in high relief on a stippled round background. It too has a bar for belt attachment. The overall size is 2/12 inches by 2 inches. Condition is near mint. [pe] [ph:L]
