Dating from the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s, this is the Model 1874 waistbelt plate.
It is a heavy cast brass belt plate with “NJ” within an oval at the center. There is a belt loop on one edge and a hook on the back.
It is remains in very good condition. The brass wears a nice tone with just a very few specks of green verdigris. [jet][ph:L]
