This is a nice example of a pre-Civil War state militia breast plate with spring pin attachment.

The body of the plate is a slightly curved, brass rectangle with clipped corners. A stamped white metal motif uses wire loops run through the plate and secured with slivers of wood on the backside. The imagery of the motif is a combination of the New York State “eagle on globe” crest and the New York City “New Amsterdam”. The imagery of a sailor, a Native American, and windmill sails represent New York City’s roots as the 17th-century Dutch trading post of New Amsterdam. A large, brass spring pin and catch are soldered to the back.

This was possibly worn by a member of the 9^th or 10^th New York State Militia in the 1850s. Perhaps even the 23^rd Regiment in 1859.

Mellow patina over all with scattered darker spotting. The Indian’s head and piece of bowstring missing. Stamped details remain strong.  [jet][ph:L]
