This is O’Donnell and Campbell Plate 703, dating ca. 1870-1880, cast brass with Massachusetts state seal at center superimposed on crossed sabers, and flanked by the company designation: “Co. / B,” all set on a recessed, black enameled ground. The pattern uses the integral belt slot of the 1851 US pattern plate, but with wide tongue on reverse, and comparatively plain face that O&C attribute to the influence of the less ornate and more functional 1872 Hagner belt plates.
Company B of the Massachusetts Militia 1st Battalion of Cavalry dated back to 1852, when it was organized as the Boston Light Dragoons and grouped with Boston’s National Lancers to form a cavalry organization first designated simply as a squadron with companies A and B, and then the 1st Battalion of Light Dragoons, which by 1860 included also the Boston Light Artillery and Waltham Light Dragoons. They were reorganized in 1864 as independent companies and then reconstituted in 1865 as the 1st Battalion of Cavalry, a designation they carried until 1906, when they became the 1st Squadron, with various later changes of name and unit affiliations.
There are scattered losses to the black enamel and some age stains, but the plate has no bends or cracks, and the belt hook is present on the reverse. [sr][ph:m]
