This is the regulation US plate worn on the infantry cartridge box sling. Made of gilt stamped rolled brass, these plates bear a raised US eagle carrying arrows and olive branch on the face and have a lead solder filled back adding stiffness and securing an iron wire bent to form two loops that pass through narrow slits in the leather cartridge box sling to be secured by a thong. The face has strong detailing to the eagle and shows mostly as a mellow brass color with some gold tones with a little reddish brown in some recesses and some thin verdigris at upper left at the wingtip and some recesses in the feathers in the wing on the left and on the right wing near the body. The rim is good, with well-defined ridges and no dings or dents. The reverse has a full lead-solder fill with no losses or excessive oxidation, gray in color, with a few light dings and a narrow crease or hairline across the fill near one edge which is stable. Both loops are in place and intact.

This pattern was first adopted in 1826 with hooks on the reverse for the bayonet shoulder belt and made of stamped rolled brass for artillery and white metal for infantry. This was changed to brass for both services in 1831 and when the bayonet was moved to the waist belt around 1842 the plate was redesigned with two loops on the back for wear in a fixed position on the cartridge box sling. They were made by a number suppliers during the war. This is a very nice, non-excavated example that displays well and could complete a cartridge box rig.  [sr][ph:L]
