Technically termed a “snake hook,” these buckles destined typically for enlisted men were imported into the Confederacy in large numbers on both tanned leather and white buff waist belts. They show up in many wartime photographs of Confederate soldiers. Typically, they were made in brass. To find one in silver indicates that this high-quality buckle was worn by an officer on a sword belt. This is in very good condition. It appears to have been excavated, but a long time back. It has rectangular shape "bars" for belt attachment rather than the typical elongated ovoid type: these are 2 inches tall. The loops that hold the snake, one by the tail the other to accommodate the head (male-female set-up) have been silver soldered into place and have a stylish half twist. The snake which is cast with great care itself is 1 3/8 long and 1 1/4 high. The whole assembly is at least 10% smaller and lighter than those for enlisted personnel. The key to recognizing a true Civil War period example is in the quality of the casting; post-Civil War examples are typically crudely cast and poorly finished. This is a great rarity and in silver is a variant rarely seen. It is certain that the buckle and the belt, it once connected, came into the Confederacy with an English made sword of the British Pattern 1829/45 type produced by Isaac, Campbell & Co.  This is a great rarity and in silver is a variant rarely seen.  [pe][ph:L]
