This is a very good example of the US Model 1858 canteen as supplied by makers to the NY Depot, a branch of the U.S. Quartermaster’s Office of Clothing and Equipage. A distinguishing feature of canteens passing through this depot was the use of a metal chain instead of simple string to retain the stopper starting in 1862. This one no longer has the chain, but the attachment hole is seen in the side strap bracket. An unattached cork is found in the spout. Each side exhibits a flat spot or dent.

There is no shoulder strap remaining. In its place is a field alteration or repair where a strip of cloth forming a loop has been sewn to one side. This could have easily been made as a belt loop or possibly to hang from a saddle horn.

The cover is a typical brownish gray wool. The cover is complete and in very good condition with no holes or tears. A nice Civil War canteen.  [ad] [ph:L]
