The body of the canteen is in excellent condition. Over the years it has retained its proper shape and is free of dents. The pewter spout is complete with the stopper chain, slightly rusted pull-ring and 95% of the cork stopper. The body also retains the two triangular sling loops.
The body of the canteen is covered with a khaki canvas and is well marked on both sides. The obverse is strongly marked with the regimental number “9” over “U.S.” over the number “8.” Between the regimental number and the “U.S.” is a partial name done in period ink but it, along with the number are partially obliterated by a hole in the canvas. Under the “U.S.” is inked the number “33.”
The reverse has a wonderful crossed rifles with the regimental number “9” above and “MASS.” below. Across the bottom is “BAND.” In faint period in above the word “BAND” are the initials F.M.R."
With the canteen is the early black leather strap which meas. approx. 1.08 inches in width. Both ends of the strap are adjustable for height and both ends have the brass hooks for attaching to the canteen. The leather is supple and strong with light to moderate surface wear. [ad] [ph:L]
