The body of the canteen is in excellent condition. Over the years it has retained its proper shape despite a small indentation at the center of each side. The pewter spout is complete with the stopper chain, pull-ring and 100% of the cork stopper. The body also retains the two triangular sling loops.
The body of the canteen is covered with a khaki canvas and is well marked on one side. There is the usual “U.S.” at center but a stenciled number and letter have been added to it so that it reads “4 U.S. V.” Above this is a Company letter “K” while at bottom is the number “21” stenciled over the number “4.”
With the canteen is the early black leather strap which meas. approx. 1.08 inches in width. Both ends of the strap are adjustable for height and both ends have the brass hooks for attaching to the canteen. The leather is supple and strong with light to moderate surface wear. There is one period repair to the sling using copper rivets otherwise it is in good condition. [ad] [ph:L]
