The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in very nice brown wool. The cover is complete and in very fine condition with no holes or tears.
The three sling loops, spout, and the stopper are all present. The pewter spout is unmarked. This is a New York Depot canteen and it still has an iron chain connected from one of the side strap brackets to the stopper ring.
The original cotton shoulder strap remains on the canteen. It has a few rust stains and one small “mouse chew” but otherwise very nice. Original inspector’s stamp can still be found on the sling.
This is a very fine example of a Civil War smooth-side canteen. [jet] [ph:L]
