The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in nice light brown wool. The cover is nearly complete with just a few stains and small holes.
The three sling loops and spout are present. The pewter spout has no maker’s mark but does have a soldier’s initials carved in. No stopper and there are dents on both side of the canteen.
The original cotton shoulder strap remains on the canteen. It has been knotted and has weak points at the side brackets but otherwise complete and nice.
This is a nice example of a Civil War smooth-side canteen, still covered and with a sling. [jet] [ph:L]
