This is a very good example of the US Model 1858 canteen as supplied by makers to the NY Depot, a branch of the U.S. Quartermaster’s Office of Clothing and Equipage. A distinguishing feature of canteens passing through this depot was the use of a metal chain instead of simple string to retain the stopper starting in 1862.
The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter with smooth sides. The three sling loops and spout are present. The pewter spout has no maker’s mark. Cork stopper is complete and is still connected to strap bracket with a chain.
The canteen is covered in brown wool. The cover is very nice with just a few small holes. The original cotton shoulder strap remains on the canteen and is full length and in excellent condition.
This is a very fine example of a Civil War New York Depot smooth-side canteen, still covered and with a sling. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet][ph:L]
