Tin drum canteens had been introduced in the US army in the 1830s, were widely used in the militia, and were a simple, natural configuration for early war volunteers with a variety of forms showing up in southern hands several years after the US army had gone to the “oblate spheroid” form. See O’Donnell, US Army & Militia Canteens 1775-1910 for numerous examples, in particular canteens 087 to 090, which show the use of impressed rings or raised surfaces to strengthen them.

This measures 6-3/4” in diameter and 2” thick. It has its three brackets in place and its complete with woven shoulder strap along with a crude wood stopper and detached short length of chain. The condition is very good. We see just a couple of shallow dings on one side and two minute holes on the other. The strap shows just minor fraying to the edge. The surface is good, showing typical dark gray oxidation of the tin plating and a more silver color to the solder used to secure the face, back, and brackets to the side band. Both sides show the wavy color pattern characteristic of period tin-coated iron.
