This Philadelphia canteen is strongly stamped “R.H. Gratz and Co.” on the spout and retains its original jean cloth cover with a beautiful light-dark weave.  Seams are hand stitched and very tight.

Light surface oxidation is visible on the strap loops while the body of the canteen appears to be in nice condition.  Stopper, chain, and strap are missing - as is common among these pieces.

Typical of the Philadelphia style, this canteen has 7 concentric rings on either side of the body meant to bolster its rigidity and strength during field use.

A wonderful example of one of the Civil War and post-Civil War’s most widely used canteens.  A true essential for any well-rounded Civil War collection.  [cm][ph:c/L]
