This is one of two nearly identical Confederate canteens with original covers and straps that we acquired. CS canteens of this style were patterned after the simple, flat sided tin canteens often used in the prewar militia but avoided painted decoration and use a cloth cover with the practical function of helping to keep the contents cool. This is made of thin, tinned sheet iron with simple three-piece body – two round faces soldered to a band around the circumference, measuring about 6 inches in diameter and 2 inches wide. The spout is tinned sheet iron as well, with soldered seam and the lip crimped over. The strap brackets, however, are iron rod rather than cut, crimped and soldered tinned sheet iron, which would have wasted both time and tinned sheet iron. This is rare in preserving both its loosely woven cover and its web carrying strap.
The condition is very good. The cover is a loosely woven tannish brown - looking very much like an army blanket. The cover is complete but shows darker brown stains and a small hole on one shoulder where one of the strap brackets pulled out and is missing. The other two brackets are there and secure, just showing expected rust. The spout is smooth metal and shows typical oxidation to gray. The carrying strap is web, showing mostly a tan/brown like the cover, but with two bands of blue threads, with the loose ends knotted toward the top, which is knotted a second time to adjust the length. The same strap appears on the other identical example of this pattern canteen suggesting the maker had access to a quantity of it for his products. The strap is in good condition overall but is nearly worn through at the remaining shoulder bracket, so it should not bear the weight of the canteen when displayed.
It is hard to find a Confederate tin canteen in anywhere near as complete condition and we were fortunate to acquire two similar canteens, both in very good condition. Those taken home as war souvenirs or for postwar use around the farm seldom preserve more than the canteen body itself. [sr][ph:L]
