Offered is a M1858 New York Depot canteen; complete with jean cloth cover, cotton sling, stopper assembly, and chain attachment.  A dent to right front of the body is noted, as well as moderate rust around the sling loops, stopper, and chain.  Sling is moderately stained but remains solid, with only one spot of fraying at the right sling loop.  It has been shortened to hang at an overall length of 19.5” – a very small size. A name is written on the outer side of the strap, with a few letters open to interpretation. Spout is still firmly attached and the areas of the body visible through the wear of the cover show a comparatively cleaner surface.

A nice example in its own right, the stenciled markings on the cover provide an additional layer of historical interest and appear to be an Indian War era unit designation.  Crossed rifles and several letters and numbers are legible and provided photographs should be referenced.

A wartime canteen with a possible service life beyond the Civil War – an interesting piece.  [cm][ph:L]
