Union infantry companies fielded eight corporals. Along with the sergeants they might be charged with supervising squads or fatigue details, but in battle were posted in the front rank of the line of battle, in theory marking the flanks of the company’s two platoons. There was, shall we say, some responsibility, and a lot of exposure.

This is an excellent pair of original army issue chevrons made of light blue, worsted wool stripes sewn to a dark blue wool patch that would be sewn to each sleeve just above the elbow. These would be worn on both the dress frock coat and the undress fatigue blouse- the standard field and campaign uniform.

This pair is in excellent condition. We see just one small nick to the blue wool backing on the upper right edge of one chevron. Wartime images and extant uniforms show some variety in the chevrons used, some privately made or soldier-made using individual stripes mounted directly on the coat, and some government issue like these, which are also the style shown in quartermaster photographs and likely made on U.S. government contracts.

These have great color, display very nicely, and would be an important part of an infantry collection. [sr] [ph:L]
