Crossed cannons as the branch of service device for artillery came into use in the US army with the regulations of 1833/34. This strikes us as a very early example, with the barrels stubbier and angled sharply upward, perhaps for wear on the shako of the 1830s. The construction also seems unusual, using a flat metallic tape for much of the barrels and bullion coils to emphasize the muzzles, breeches and reinforcing bands.

The condition is fair, with some of the underlying cording exposed at the middle and just above that on part of the barrel jutting up to the left. Nevertheless, the rarity more than makes up for the condition. It was carefully made and we see nothing quite like it in Emerson or in Campbell and O’Donnell.  The back is open and has a small piece of tape applied with a collector inventory number.  [sr][ph:L]
