Union infantry companies fielded eight corporals. Along with the sergeants they might be charged with supervising squads or fatigue details, but in battle were posted in the front rank of the line of battle, in theory marking the flanks of the company’s two platoons.

This is an excellent pair of original army issue chevrons made of light blue, worsted wool stripes sewn to a dark blue wool patch that would be sewn to each sleeve just above the elbow. These would be worn on both the dress frock coat and the undress fatigue blouse- the standard field and campaign uniform items of the Federal soldier.

These chevrons are in excellent condition with minimal wear to the light blue tape in a singular area.  Both measure 9” across from end to end, with each half measuring 6.5” from tip to the center of the “V” shape.

These stripes match the most common chevron style of the war; found in the majority of original photographs, quartermaster returns, and in many respected collections around the country.  There is no obvious evidence to suggest they were removed from a coat or jacket, most likely making these surplus contract-made items.

These would be a perfect focal point of any Civil War militaria, non-commissioned officer (NCO), or infantry collection.  [cm][ph:L]
