This insignia was issued for use on the 1858 dress hat of enlisted men. It differs from the earlier examples in several ways. This trumpet is larger, has a double instead of a single twist, a tightly wrapped cord with no tassels and two reinforcing bars in the loop of the twist. The item is made of stamped brass with two wire prongs on the reverse for attaching to a cap or hat. It meas. approx. 3.25 inches in length and is in very nice unused condition.
These insignia saw use throughout the Civil War. [AD] [PH:L]
