We take our title from the Schuyler, Hartley and Graham listing of similar straps in their 1864 catalog (pages 61 and 62, in particular.) These straps have strong black color to the velvet ground, which shows no rubbing, oxidation or moth nips. The borders are embroidered bullion with a wide center row and narrow rows, of equal width to one another, running around the interior and exterior, with thin jaceron wire edges as well.
The center of each strap has a single, five-pointed, embroidered bullion star that is in high relief like the wide, central row of the border. The very top of each star shows a small bit of white, likely the base for a now missing sequin, bullion knot, or small star anchoring the individual bullion strands coming up in the angles of the star’s points, giving the appearance of tying it down.
The raised middle row and more exposed outer row of bullion show some natural rubbing of the gilt and oxidation to silver gray, with the more shielded inner row of each strap showing a thin gold and the color of the jaceron wire unaffected. The base fabric was trimmed close to the edges at some point, likely when they were removed from a coat, to neaten up the edges. The jaceron wire outer edge is in place. On the reverse there are some darker threads near the edges that likely held the turned-under edges of the base fabric, leaving the center of the backs open, as is usual with Civil War shoulder straps.
Needless to say, this is hard rank of shoulder strap to find and these are in good condition, with eye-appeal, and showing just enough age and wear to show they were worn on a uniform. [sr][ph:L]
