This is an excellent condition, embroidered bullion hat insignia for an officer in a 16th regiment of infantry. The hunting horn was a traditional insignia for light infantry that appeared in 1814 as the insignia for riflemen in the U.S. Army and in the 1830s for U.S. infantry in general, shifting from silver to gold in color about 1851, but with the regimental numeral in silver. In this case the maker has used silver to highlight some elements of the horn as well.
The black velvet ground retains strong color, with no holes and none of the oxidation toward brown seen on many examples. The very edge of the oval patch shows some wear to the nap from rubbing, but no holes and the gold jaceron wire border is still firmly attached and the velvet is still securely sewn to the web underlay around the reverse edge. The gold color of the embroidery is strong, showing only slight oxidation, and the silver numeral are strong as well, showing the use of dead and bright bullion strands. The back is open, showing just a couple of thin brown stains to the web. These are sometimes made with an internal stiffener and metal loops for attachment by leather wedges or a thong. In this case the insignia was meant to be sewn in place.
This would make a nice addition to a collection of Civil War embroidered insignia or an officer’s display, or, needless to say, a representative example if you are interested in one of the several Union regiments designated as the 16th. [sr][ph:L]
