Initially intended just for the army dress or Hardee hat, the crossed sabers, like the infantry hunting horn and artillery crossed cannons, were quickly adapted for use on fatigue caps, kepis and all sorts of non-regulation headgear as well. As issued, the insignia only indicated the branch of service. Regimental and company affiliation had to be shown by separately affixed numerals and letters.

This is fully regulation: die-stamped rolled brass, 3-1/4” wide, with no bends or breaks and all four soldered fastening loops present on the reverse to fasten it to the hat or cap with narrow leather wedges or thongs. The face has a pleasing, medium patina with some thin age stains in recessed areas. The reverse shows some darker age stains but also traces of gilt to the brass, along with natural oxidation to the solder holding the fastening loops.

This is a very good example the regulation Civil War Union cavalryman’s insignia. [sr][ph:m/L]
