A scarce example of a Civil War officer’s embroidered bullion hat insignia showing how these appeared before being mounted directly on a hat or being trimmed to an oval and given a jaceron wire border to then be sewn on or attached by small loops on an internal stiffener. The insignia is regulation, with the infantry hunting horn worked in gold bullion embroidery and the regimental number, 17, worked in silver. Both elements retain strong color, as does the black ground, which shows just a tiny slit at the upper left corner. The insignia is high quality, with bright thicker coils used to accentuate the mouth of the hunting horn, the reinforcing ridges, the mouthpiece, and the bugle cords.
Embroidered bullion insignia is a great combination of history and art. This one has a great eye appeal and clearly shows one as it likely appeared in a period military goods dealer’s showcase, or in his inventory, ready for finishing for an officer in a 17th infantry regiment needing to look his best.
