This is great example of the regulation embroidered bullion hat insignia for an infantry officer. The hunting horn insignia indicating infantry is embroidered in gold bullion thread on a black velvet ground trimmed to an oval and given a gold jaceron wire border and a sewn backing fabric with a stiffener inside carrying two small loops that protrude on the back, would be passed through slits in the hat and secured by leather wedges or a thong passed through them inside the hat. One of the loops is bent to one side, but both are secure and the fabric is free of holes on front and back. The jaceron wire is complete and in place and shows just a couple of small bends or slight stretching of the coils from handling. This is a nice looking piece. The maker used gold sequins to highlight the edge of the bugle’s mouth, a reinforcing band just forward of the loop, and the mouthpiece. They also used twisted bullion cord to highlight those points and to form the bugle cords,
The condition overall is excellent. We see just some very slight rubbing to the gilt on the top of the loop of the horn from handling. This is eye catching and we note it never had a regimental numeral applied to it, the military goods dealer likely not wanting to limit potential purchasers to one regiment, but having a drawer full of silvered, false-embroidered numerals he could add for a nominal, additional charge, though photos of officers wearing infantry hat insignia omitting the number are not uncommon.
