A very good set of infantry captain’s single-border, embroidered bullion shoulder straps. These show moderate signs of age and use, but pleasing color overall, with some moth damage that is confined to the backs. The bullion of the borders and rank bars shows a slight patina from age, but has not oxidized to the silver or gray often seen. The bullion strands are all in place. The jaceron wire edging the rank bars and the borders inside and out is complete and all there, with good color, the coils not “sprung” or distended, and is mostly tight against the bullion embroidery, though there are a couple of spots where it has pulled away very slightly. The medium-blue velvet is good, with no moth holes, but wear to the nap in places that gives a lighter tone. The dark blue underlay was turned under and sewn down. It shows some loose threads on the back, indicating the straps were on a coat for some time, and there are moth nips on the back and some spots along the edge giving it a slightly ragged look when viewed from some angles. On the whole, however, these show off very nicely. Please see our photos.
This is nice set of straps worn by an infantry company commander, ten to the typical infantry regiment, whose place in battle was in the firing line with his men. [sr][ph:L]
