Infantry majors, like the other field grade regimental officers were combat officers, serving under fire in the front lines, and with only one major to thirty line officers, their shoulder straps are hard to find. This pair is in excellent condition, with great color. They have single row borders of embroidered gold “dead and bright” bullion strands bordered by gilt jaceron wire inside and out. The fields are a medium blue velvet. The rank insignia are bullion embroidery also, using bright strands to accentuate the veins of the oak leaves at either end of the straps. The underlay is turned under and sewn down, leaving the center of the backs open, as is typical of Civil War straps.
There are some stray brown threads on the underside showing these were on a coat at some point, but the condition is excellent, with strong color to the embroidered borders, rank insignia, blue field, and jaceron wire. The gold color of the borders and the wire edging is bright, with none of the usual oxidation or rubbing toward silver or gray. There is virtually no moth damage. On one strap a couple of bullion strands are missing on one corner and part of a strand on another, other than that we just two spots where the jaceron wire has moved away from the edge of the bullion, but the jaceron wire coils are not distended or “sprung” and could probably be realigned if desired, though the gaps between it and the bullion border are very narrow and not distracting.
This is an exceptionally nice set of Union officer’s straps, in very good condition and with a lot of eye-appeal. The combination of the medium blue field with the gold rank insignia, borders, and edging is particularly pleasing. [sr][ph:L]
