The badge of the 9th Corps was officially adopted April 10, 1864, as General Burnside was recruiting men in anticipation of joining Grant’s Overland Campaign in Virginia. Since Burnside outranked Meade, the corps would be under the direct orders of Grant but fighting side by side with Meade’s three army corps, who had been wearing corps badges proudly for two years. The crossed cannon and anchor on the badge of the 9th Corps was a tribute to their origin in Burnside’s early-war coastal expedition to North Carolina and the formation of the troops under his command into the 9th Corps on July 22,1862. In some versions of the badge a rope attached to the ring of the anchor coils around its shank to form a “9.” The corps had served in the Departments of North Carolina, Virginia, the Ohio, the Tennessee, the Ohio again before returning east and joining Grant. At the very end of the war they were assigned to the Department of Washington before dissolving July 27, 1865.  This is a nicely made badge, flat on the back, measuring just 1” by 1-1/8” and showing three small holes, at upper right and left, and at bottom center, indicating it was attached to a ribbon or suspended from a pinback bar of some sort.  [sr][ph:L]
