A very good condition pair of infantry Major’s shoulder straps that are a cut-above in quality, using two rows of embroidered bullion for the borders and deep blue velvet fields. The jaceron wire borders are present along the inner and outer edges of the borders. The embroidered bullion of the borders and the rank insignia match in patina with the borders showing just a tad darker along the central ridge from wear with brighter gilt showing in recesses. The bullion strands show just one or two points where strands have spread apart from one another in flexing. The blue velvet shows some slight wear spots to the nap, but no holes, and shows as a pleasing, mottled medium and deep blue. The backs were closed with brown polished cotton, which has come loose on one corner.
Infantry field-grade straps are tough to find, there being only one major, lieutenant colonel and colonel at a time in a regiment. In addition to their large administrative and organizational duties they were also combat officers, serving mounted to better supervise the men, and offering larger targets to the enemy, though experience taught many to send their mounts to the rear when going into action.
