This set of Civil War shoulder straps has a lot of eye appeal. The wool centers are a bright, medium blue with no moth tracks, damage or fading. The single row embroidered bullion borders and rank insignia have a matching medium-bright gold patina. The borders clearly show the use of dead and bright bullion strands, every four strands of the subdued bullion being bordered by a bright strand, and the jaceron wire along the inner and outer edges of the borders and along the rank bars is in place, only showing a slight gap on the inner edge of one border and the corner of one rank bar. The only defect, and not much of one, is that the dark blue underlay was trimmed along the edge, likely to eliminate a ragged edge. This was very neatly done and is not noticeable from the top. The backs are thus open, showing the web base and embroidery thread, but the central portion was usually left exposed in any case by the edges being simply turned under and sewn down, and these are frequently in tatters from pulled threads or moth bites.
These have very strong color and show off nicely. They would add a lot to an officer’s display, look great with an officer’s sash and foot officer’s sword, and likely improve upon many examples in a specialized embroidered bullion insignia collection. [sr][ph:L]
