Schuyler, Hartley and Graham and other military goods dealers would list these as “Extra Rich, Three Row Shoulder Straps, Wide Centre” in their catalogs. They are impressive, beautiful, in fine condition, and scarce, the rank indicating the officer was serving at a higher echelon than regimental staff duty and likely with considerable responsibility at division, corps or even army level.
The borders use three rows of gold bullion embroidery, with the center row a bit wider than the inner and outer rows, the bullion coils in each row angled opposite the row next to it to produce a chevron effect, and the outer and inner edges having delicate jaceron wire borders. The rank insignia are the silver oak leaves of a Lieutenant Colonel with the veins indicated by bullion coils and emphasized by sequins, with the deep black velvet fields setting off both the silver of the oakleaves. The backs were closed with black fabric and brown ties affixed to each corner, enabling the owner to remove the straps for cleaning, for use of another pair, or for wear of epaulets for full-dress. Their condition is outstanding, with lots of the gilt finish showing on the borders and silver on the oakleaf rank insignia, no moth damage, and no displaced jaceron wire or bullion coils. Please see our photographs. [sr][ph:L]
