A higher quality set of embroidered bullion shoulder straps for a staff captain. These use a double border of two rows of embroidered bullion and two rows for each of the rank bars as well. Both are edged with jaceron wire and their gilt finish is set off by the deep black velvet field indicating staff duty, which could be in a supporting service like the Quartermaster Department or frontline duty as member of a regimental, brigade, division, corps or even army level staff, serving in various capacities such as an aide, adjutant, adjutant general, or other post that might carry the officer under fire. It is also frequently used by members of the medical staff, who might omit the officially required “MS” in the middle of the strap.
These show some use, with some slight wear to the velvet, pinching to the edges of the straps, that can be straightened, from being on a coat that was folded, and some rubbing or oxidation of the bullion giving it a slight silver shade, but are in very good condition overall and show on the back the additional touch of closing it with black fabric and adding laces to the corners so that the straps might be attached through small grommet holes on the shoulders and taken off when necessary- for cleaning, replacement, exchange for epaulets for full dress, etc.
See the Schuyler, Hartley and Graham 1864 catalog for some of the elaborate versions of shoulder straps available to an officer, depending on his taste and pocket book. This is a very good set. [sr][ph:L]
