This 5th Corps badge retains a striking partial identification with a mounted gem sized tintype photo of a bearded soldier and a very old inscription cut into the back of the tin simply reading “5TH”. Given the span of existence of the Corps during the Civil War - the badge dates from 1862-1865.
The metal body is unmistakably a 5th Corps symbol, rounded with linear border patterns, and a hollow center. The edge flats are accented with a uniform triple-pearl design. A horizontal jeweler’s roll pin is secured to the reverse and held closed by a sweeping hook. The gem-sized tintype photo framed at center shows a bearded US soldier in his enlisted frock and forage cap. The reverse of the image is exposed and “5TH” is lightly carved into the metal surface with artistic flair. The face of the image shows some surface crazing and a miniscule crack, but the overall presentation is largely unaffected. Dimensions are 1.45” x 1.45”.
An uncommonly seen variety of Corps badge from the famed 5th Corps – quite the desirable piece for the collector. [cm] [ph:L]
