The capture of Richmond and the hoisting of the Stars and Stripes over the former capital on April 3, 1865, was a defining Union victory in the Civil War, often commemorated by medals, including this rare 1865 white metal drop medallion.
The example is punched at the top for a suspension link, attached to a federal eagle brooch. The drop medallion features a bust portrait of General Grant, with text and 13-stars around the edge. The reverse features 36 stars (the number on the US flag flown over the captured city) and text at center which reads, “CAPTURE OF RICHMOND APRIL 3[r]D. 1865”. The dimensions are 1.5” x 2”.
A very rare piece from one of the most consequential events of the war. [cm][ph:L]
