Measuring 4-3/4” tall and 3-1/2” wide, this die-struck brass or copper plate has uniform “ deep olive green patina with the exception of two or three minute rubs on highpoints near the top edge that show the tiniest bits of brighter metal. There are no bends, cracks or breaks, and the raised motifs are very finely detailed.

The sides are straight. The top and bottom edges have four scallops. The edge is bordered by two ridges 5/16” apart, between which runs a vines with leaves and berries. The central motif is an eagle with shield in high relief on its chest, superimposed on a panoply of arms and flags, with an arc of stars at top between the spearheads of the flagstaffs, and an E PLURIBUS UNUM ribbon scroll parallelling it just underneath, below which finely delineated sun rays descend on the eagle, which has its head turned to the heraldic left.

For parallels see Campbell & O’Donnell, Headgear Insignia, Figs. 627-629 in particular. The reverse has some thin reddish brown mixed in with the olive green and shows remnants of solder that would have secured a plume holder at top and fastening loops at either side.   [sr][ph:L]
