A rare and fine example of an original Civil War-era U.S. Army Signal Corps hat or cap insignia. This oval bullion embroidered badge features two crossed signal flags on a black velvet ground, with a constellation of embroidered stars above — all hallmarks of the Signal Corps branch device. The flags display red centers with silver/gilt bullion wrapping, and the letters "US" appear beneath the crossed staffs in silver thread. The piece is finished with a fine twisted silver wire border around the oval perimeter.
The reverse shows the original pasteboard backing with thread lacing intact, consistent with period manufacture. Measures approximately 2 inches wide. Displays beautifully.
Condition: Good antique condition with expected age wear and some thread loss. Rare. [ss] [ph:L]
